Avalon lifeguards Craig Whitehead and Shane McGrath will try to win their third straight Upper Township Beach Patrol M.S. Six-Mile Bay Row today.
The 18th annual bay row for lifeguards and alumni begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Deauville Inn in the Strathmere section of Upper Township. A paddleboard race in the bay, which precedes the row, starts at 5:45 p.m.
From the Deauville Inn starting line, the crews will row to Sea Isle City, turn in the other direction to southern Ocean City and then make a final turn and head back to the Deauville. It's the only South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs Association race that's held exclusively on the bay.

Whitehead has won the Six-Mile Bay Row a record five times, with three different partners. He won with McGrath in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 3 seconds in 2009 and in 1:12:32 last year. The Avalon pair have also won their first three beach races this season, including the mile doubles row at the Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic on Friday.
Margate's Ashton Funk and Chuck Gowdy, Bay Row winners in 2007 and 2008, are also entered. Margate alumnus Carl Smallwood Jr., a three-time winner of the race with Rich Kugel, will team with B.J. Fox today. Smallwood and Fox were second last year in 1:13:03. Avalon's Matt O'Donoghue, third last year with Kevin Moore, will row with Matt Wolf. Erich Wolf, Matt's brother, will pair with Evan McGillin.

Graves Disease

Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid, causing the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. It affects about 2-3% of the population or approximately 10 million people. It is not gender specific, however it is between 5-10 times more common in women. The onset of the disease usually occurs in middle age, but can occur at other times in life.

If left untreated Graves Disease, which is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, can lead to more serious complications. Most people suffering with the disease also have and increased heart rate, which could lead to cardiovascular damage. Also it is common for those with the disease to have bulging eyes, a side effect that can lead to infections of the cornea or even blindness. In summary if Graves Disease is not treated properly it can lead to disability or even death.
Grammy award winning Hip-Hop star Missy Elliot is featured in People magazine talking about how she is coping with Graves Disease. Diagnosed back in 2008 she has been away from the music scene dealing with the side effects of the disease including dizzy spells, mood swings, hair loss and decreased motor skills. She has undergone radiation treatment on the thyroid and after a course of medication she seems to be doing much better now and is off medication. There is not a cure for Graves Disease, however with treatment and proper monitoring by a physician one can live a normal life.
