Marisa Miller

Victoria's Secret model Marisa Miller paid a visit to "Conan" last night and -- would you believe it? -- host Conan O'Brien seemed pretty happy about it. When they're around beautiful women, every late-night host has his own patented shtick: Jay Leno asks lots of uncomfortable personal questions, David Letterman showers them with compliments and O'Brien acts like a short-circuiting robot; you half expect his head to spin around and springs to shoot out of his ears.
And so it was Monday night when Miller, decked out in a black miniskirt and hot pink stilettos, took a seat next to O'Brien. "You look extremely sexy," he said, punctuating his sentence with nasal laughter. Miller came with a purpose, of course: promoting her new line of stand-up paddle boards. (Well, that's a new one.)
The plan was for Miller to give O'Brien a paddling lesson and "tap into your inner surfer boy. ... I'm gonna find it."
"Look hard," O'Brien joked.
During the demonstration (in front of a green-screen projection of beautiful turquoise water) Miller took a hands-on approach, adjusting the placement of O'Briens legs and hips.
"Need more help," he demanded.
In the end, Miller gave O'Brien a positive assessment. "You're a natural. ... You have a good center of gravity and your abs are really hard," she said, smacking his torso.
"You know what's really hard? That right there!" O'Brien said, pointing to his butt, and Miller complied with a few quick spanks.
The things a girl has to do to sell a few paddle boards these days...

Helen Mirren

Yesterday a man entered an AutoZone store on East 149th Street and tried to walk out with an electric drill and a set of Allen wrenches, worth about $80, setting off alarms. Two clerks chased the alleged perpetrator out of the store and tackled him; the wrestling match involved reversals and what the Post refers to as a "full nelson" as well as threats with a dirty syringe. Onlookers were taunting the clerks during the melée, shouting, "It's not your store! Why do you care?" Ultimately the alleged thief got free of his pursuers, leaving the goods behind, but not before one of the clerks, Nelson Loizada, called 911 with one hand while maintaining a headlock on the thief with the other. The cops arrived ten minutes later, and found the alleged thief walking along 138th Street.
Why are we talking about an $80 heist that didn't come off and a hero store-clerk who let the perpetrator go? Only one reason: The photo on the cover of today's paper.
If you didn't know better you'd think it had been posed by actors: How'd this shot work out so well? Looking right into the camera is Loizada, the phone in one hand and his arm around the tattooed, Kojak-scalped thief he pursued; he is also looking into the camera, his face pulled into a fighting grimace. Another guy, his face out of the frame, is leaning on the man's lower half and bracing his arms. The shot is crystal clear, and the color is amazing.
"TOUGH CALL" is the knockout -white type at the bottom of the page; "Handy hero nails 'perp,' dials cops at same time." It's the whole front page.
Daily News: With a great photo some stories that aren't so big may move to the head of the class, no matter what's happening in the news. For instance, Congress' deadline passage of a raise in the debt ceiling, just in time to keep federal coffers from default.
No, I agree, it's actually not that interesting anymore; since Saturday the real story has been the political fallout. Whither the Republicans? Is Obama damaged? Why do we listen to the Tea Party? But we're not tabloid newspapers; and the tabloid newspapers have tried very hard to find angles to make this story relevant and interesting to the average reader.
Today, not so much: With the putative news event of the story having taken place yesterday, it is absent not just on the cover of the Post but on the News—almost. There is one human-interest angle to take: Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' 11th-hour arrival, in the middle of her recovery from the Jan. 8 assassination attempt that resulted in a near-fatal gunshot wound to her head. That's how theNews sells the story on the front today, with a small skybox labeling Giffords "HERO AMONG ZEROS."
Another skybox touts another Yankees win, but we should really get below the flag.
The main news space is divided vertically in half, and it's like a lesson in the highs and lows of tabloid journalism. On the left, Helen Mirren is pictured, in a 2008 photo of her on vacation in Italy with her husband that back then was big news because she was 63 years old and looked really hot in a red retro-looking bikini. On the right is Jennifer Lopez in a rather drab black sheath with midriff cutout on some kind of red carpet.
"SEXIER THAN J. LO!" screams the red text (all-caps, white-outline, drop-cap) at a skewed angle across the bottom. "AND SHE'S 66—SEE PAGE 12." This important information comes to us from a poll of 2,000 men and women conducted by the noted scientific authority L.A. Fitness, a gym chain. Elle McPherson and Kelly Brook are also among those women judged against Mirren to lose the "Body of the Year" title in the poll.
But there is important information on the front of the News today, of the variety that I think actually would get tons of avid reads, hateful or otherwise, from the News' base. In the case presently before Brooklyn federal judge Nicholas Garaufis, black firefighters represented by the Vulcan Society are trying to get the judge to appoint a special monitor to watch the fire department's hiring practices and how it investigates cases of discrimination and bring reform to both systems. The FDNY came under heavy criticism when it hired former policemen Edward McMellon and Richard Murphy, who were acquitted in the shooting death of Amadou Diallo but forced to leave the department because of their role in it. But most important was the reading into the public record of the 2008 deposition from one of the department's former personnel commissioners, Patricia Kavaler, detailing a culture of fraternal help among largely Irish-American firemen to bring in family and family friends, paper over criminal records to get men into the department, cover up for personnel who'd committed acts of domestic violence, and so on.
"'BOYS WILL BE BOYS'" reads the main hed, quoting from the Kavaler deposition. It's big white text on a black field, with no art. (Well, with Helen Mirren in a bikini only an inch or two away, who's looking!Rrrow!) The dek reads, "Testimony: White misfits get pass to join FDNY."
Does that seem to you to convey the drama of the testimony, which includes a passage like this, quoted in full in the article, in which Kavaler describes the types of directives she was given on the job?
"'He beat his wife but his wife took him back so he shouldn't be considered a wife beater. He still could be a good firefighter.'"
"You would have lieutenants and captains, whatever, [reaching out to the] chief of department: 'This is so and so, this is the son of so and so. I lived next door to him for years, he's a good guy, he just had a fight in a disco, he got drunk, someone made a pass at his girlfriend, he socked him' … something like that."
Observations: Well, I think the photo wins it, which is a little heartbreaking. I can't help but wonder whether the News was ambivalent about the "FDNY'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET," which is very dirty, not little, and not exactly a secret. It's how I think most people assume the fire department operates, whether it's fair or not. And after all isn't that what these inquiries are supposed to determine?
This testimony seems to bring the matter right to the top, which would suggest something systemic in the lower ranks. The News could make a crusade out of this, although it would pit them against Irish-American firefighting families. I wonder if that's a fight they want. It's a great piece of wood, if your heart is in the work.

The Madawaska, Maine, native, 26, who will soon finish dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, promised herself she'd follow her heart to true love -- and now she says she's found it.
Two men asked for her hand in marriage on Monday's finale: Sonoma, California, winemaker Ben Flajnik, 28, and New York construction manager J.P. Rosenbaum, 34.
Keep reading to find out whose proposal Ashley accepted ...
Viewers saw that Hebert had an incredible connection to Flajnik, but it was the more reserved Rosenbaum who captured her heart.
After turning down Flajnik's heartfelt proposal in which he confessed, "Every second I spend with you makes me fall deeper in love with you. I want to thank you for allowing me to feel completely and utterly vulnerable and open with you," Hebert waited for Rosenbaum's arrival via seaplane.
Once Rosenbaum arrived, neither he nor Hebert could contain their happiness.
"All the time we've spent together, it's been the happiest time of my life," Rosenbaum said with a grin. "And you always say to me you're smiling all the time, you're going to have wrinkles when you're older. Well, I smile because of you. You bring that out. What I do know for absolute certain is that I am madly in love with you. I love everything about you."
After sharing a passionate kiss, Hebert tells him, "Today is the reason why I went through all the good times and the bad times, and I've been wanting to tell you how much I loved you for so long now. You mean the world to me and I do not want to be with anyone else forever."
"I'm so in love with you. You're the one. You're it," Rosenbaum said earnestly, getting down on one knee and opening the pretty little black box containing a diamond Neil Lane engagement ring. "Ashley, will you marry me?"
"Yes!" Hebert replied, bending down to kiss Rosenbaum while he placed the ring on her finger. The two kissed -- and kissed, and kissed -- as they walked into the Fijian sunset.

Helen Mirren

What do David Beckham and Helen Mirren have in common? Aside from being two famous Brits, they also have the most desirable bodies. That's right, 66-year-old Dame Helen Mirren has the hottest bod in Hollywood.
The Oscar-winning actress was named “Body of the Year" by 2,000 people who were apart of a L.A. Fitness survey. She beat model Elle MacPherson, who came in a not-even-close second place, singer Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Brook, who came in third, and even Jennifer Lopez, who came in fourth place. The Dame even bested Pippa Middleton, Kate Middleton's little sister, who came in eighth place with only four percent of the vote.
Mirren’s win should came as no surprise to people who have seen pictures of the Dame topless in New York Magazine.Looks like Mirren's proving that age is certainly nothing but a number.
Helen Mirren is currently set to film the controversial Phil Spector biopic, starring Al Pacino as the famed music producer. The actress will play Spector's defence attorney Linda Kenney Baden.

HipHop

By now the world is only just beginning to wrap its head round the enormity of the tragedy in Oslo, Norway. Almost a hundred people dead–most of them children at a summer camp–in not one but two different acts of terror on the same day.
This is an act of terrorism. It bears repeating because some news outlets–even supposedly reputable ones–don’t seem to think that acts like these are worthy of the label unless it’s carried out by Muslims. Of course, as we all now know, Muslims weren’t responsible for these events. In fact, they were quite clearly one of the targets.
Anders Behring Breivik hates Muslims, in particular what they have done to his “beloved Norway.” More broadly, he hates the notion of multiculturalism. We all have heard over the past several days about his virulent hatred for any kind of tolerance or inclusion, let alone the kind of anti-racism espoused by the “cultural Marxists” from whom he saves particular bile in his 1500 page manifesto. His links with far-right Islamophobes like Stop the Islamization of Europe and proto-fascist groups like the English Defence League are really the best indicator for what Breivik was trying to achieve.
Perhaps then it’s not such a surprise that among the myriad blights he profiles in this long screed is a music genre with its own history of criminalization:hip-hop.
To those unfamiliar, it may be strange to think of Norway, a country of under 5 million people and typically thought of as lily white, having any kind of hip-hop scene to speak of. More than 200,000 of these 4.8 million, however, are immigrants from Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan or Turkey, along with countless others of mixed heritage. Over the past two decades, Norway’s hip-hop scene had varied from duos like Madcon–whose members are both of African heritage–to the all-white trio Warlocks–because, as we all know, there are plenty of white kids attracted to hip-hop.
One of these kids, believe it or not, was Anders Breivik. In the mid-90s he was apparently a part of Oslo’s insurgent hip-hop community. His best friend was Pakistani, and, if his manifesto is to be believed, the two of them were among the most infamous graffiti artists in the city.
At some point, however, Breivik had a change (or loss) of heart, and now lays the blame for many of Norway’s social ills squarely at the front door of what he now calls the “ghetto/ethnic/multiculturalist lifestyle”:
I personally know of more than 50 individuals who started with hashish and marijuana as a direct result of the hip-hop mentality. Many of these went from light drugs to heavier drugs such as amphetamine and even heroin. I personally know that more than 20 individuals, from my ‘hip-hop community’, have become severe drug addicts and some of them are probably dead today.
Breivik goes on to estimate that around 40% of drug addicts in Norway have been somehow duped into it by hip-hop. It’s a ludicrous claim, bordering on the delusional, but not quite as delusional as Breivik’s overblown, almost self-congratulatory guess at how much property damage he committed as a tagger:
During my two most active years at the age of 15 and 16, I estimate that myself [and his crew] inflicted property damage (through bombing raids – “tagging”) of approximately 2 million Euro combined of which I inflicted aprox. 700 000.
It’s a familiar narrative: pop music produces drug addiction, property damage, and from there it’s only a short jump to all manner of social decay. To Breivik, the sounds of the microphone and turntable, embraced by kids of every race the world over, are little more than the soundtrack of the invading brown hordes.
Anyone, however, who takes a cursory look at Norway’s recent musical history will see a very different picture–one of much more atrocious acts than petty vandalism.
From 1992 to ‘95, probably right around the time Breivik was popping open his first Sharpie, no less than 28 Christian churches across Norway were burned in acts of arson or attempted arson. The culprits for several of these weren’t Islamic fundamentalists, but native born Norwegians Bard “Faust” Eithun and Varg Vikernes, members of the country’s rising black metal scene.
While in prison for killing a fellow musician, Vikernes became a leading figure in what is termed the “estoteric Nazism” movement, a strange mixture of Norse paganism and old-fashioned white power ideology. Eithun was convicted in 1992 of beating a gay man to death outside the Olympic Village in Lillehammer. Both have since been released.
In 2001, Benjamin Hermansen, a sixteen-year-old Ghanaian-Norwegian school student, was stabbed to death in the multiracial suburb of Holmlia; the Norwegian police called it “Norway’s first racially motivated murder.” He was killed by three members of a neo-Nazi gang known as “the Boot Boys,” who had been known to orient to the local street punk and Oi! scenes.
Neither black metal nor punk rock are to blame for these deaths or arson. In fact, the Nazi component makes up barely a fraction of either scene. And yet, according to the logic of Anders Behring Breivik, the punks and metalheads should be just as much to blame as hip-hop is for drug use and urban decay. The only reason they aren’t mentioned is that ultimately, Breivik has a lot more in common with Vikernes and the Boot Boys.
What may be most horrifying about Breivik’s notions on hip-hop is how he believes this particular “problem” can be solved:
“As for the fate of the hiphop industry; banning it altogether is not the optimal solution as it would cause overwhelming short term outcry and it would eliminate positive aspects as well. However, I believe [in] significant restrictions in the rights of media companies which will include censoring negative and destructive lifestyles. An alternative is to limit such marketing to future ‘liberal zones’. Certain positive aspects of the hiphop movement should be allowed to survive such as break dance and positive genres of the music as long as it positively influences the self confidence of European youths and only if it can be re-defined as a European tradition…”
There’s a term for this: apartheid. Perhaps that’s not so surprising considering that Breivik also calls for Israel to “finish the job” in Palestine and for the re-imposition of white rule in South Africa. Ask any Black blues musician what it was like to play in the Jim Crow south, and they’ll likely paint a picture similar to Breivik’s (final) solution.
And yet, here in the States, we’ve heard this basic line before–and not just from the fringe lunatics. We’ve heard Sarah Palin call Common a cop-killer and Don Imus claim that rap was responsible for his own hatred toward women. We’ve heard it from city councils outlawing baggy pants and police chiefs targeting backwards ballcaps.
Likewise, the kind of anti-Muslim hate spewed by Breivik has become a fixture of everyday life. The crusade against multiculturalism is one that runs the gamut from the vile protests against the Park51 community center in New York City to the speeches of David Cameron and Angela Merkel.
As ordinary Norwegians figure out a way to heal from the devastation, the stakes have never been higher. What the tragedy in Oslo and the racist rants of Anders Behring Breivik show us is that the fight for a world of true equality and justice is one that touches every aspect of our lives. If his kind have their way, then this cruel brand of white-bred repression will extend from the halls of power into our schools, our communities, and yes, even our record stores.

Bear Grylls

NTERNATIONAL TV star Bear Grylls will have to eat a jar of Vegemite with a box of dry Weetbix and tuna if he loses a ping pong competition against an Albury man.
Jimmy Ladgrove, 20, will go head to head in a game of “Aussie pong” against Grylls in August, using saucepans as bats.
Their uniform — a singlet, shorts and thongs.
“Aussie pong” requires practice and expertise, according to its creator, who moved to Melbourne this year to study TV production at NMIT.
Getting in hours of practice since he found out he’d won the “Solo Beat Bear” competition two months ago, he is certain he will win.
“It’s actually pretty hard, and he’s so busy I don’t think he will have time to practise,” he said.
Mr Ladgrove thought a jar of Vegemite and dry Weetbix would be far from the most disgusting things Grylls has eaten.
“He has eaten some pretty gross things, like a dead zebra,” he said.
“It’s only a little jar anyway.”
But what if Grylls does win?
“I put Vegemite on pretty thick, I love it, so I’m not too concerned,” Mr Ladgrove said.
The former Albury High student said he will consider adding a lemon to the mix, to give the combination a bit more of a “zing” if Grylls required more flavour.
It’s not the first time Mr Ladgrove has won a competition.
Last year he won a date with Kim Kardashian in Melbourne.
He believes it’s all about the law of attraction; think positively and envisage what you want and it will come to you.
Going up against his idol on August 31, Mr Ladgrove said he loves the optimistic outlook Grylls portrays, particularly through social media like twitter.
“Because of people like him, I’ve gotten to think positive,” he said.

Hannah Montana

Miley Cyrus is showing her support for the gay community with her latest tattoo. The former ‘Hannah Montana’ starlet showed off her seventh piece of ink on her official Twitter page on Friday, July 29 along with the message, “All LOVE is equal.”
18-year-old Cyrus got an equal sign tattooed on her ring finger. If the finger is in fact her left ring finger, Miss Miley is taking her equal rights message one step further by getting this particular digit tatted — this is the finger that is reserved for wedding and engagement rings.
Some sources like The Daily Mail are saying that this tattoo might also signify The All Love is Equalcampaign recently launched by Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby. However, Cyrus has also been outspoken about gay rights in the past. When Casey Anthony was found ‘not guilty’ on murder charges a few weeks ago, Cyrus tweeted, “You know the world is skewed when people get away with murdering children but we cant get gay marriage legalized in the state of California.”
Cyrus has never been shy about voicing her thoughts, and this tattoo is just one more way the singer can express her personal beliefs. It’s always great to see pop stars speak out for LGBT rights, especially stars who have a large influence on younger generations. The equal sign joins Cyrus’ other pieces of body art, including a heart on her pinky finger (pictured), a dream catcher on her ribcage, and an anchor on her wrist.

Nick Lachey

After dating for five years, star celebs Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo got married on a private island. They kept helicopters and planes away by pulling a fireworks permit, surprising the paparazzi who hoped to fly in with telephoto lens cameras to spy on the celebrity couple on their special day.
Vanessa Minnillo replaces Jessica Simpson as Mrs. Lachey
The footage of the celebs private wedding ceremony aired on Saturday, July 30th to the delight of pop music fans familiar with the former teen idol. Lachey used to be married to actress and singer Jessica Simpson and the two were wed for a short time. They actually allowed cameras to film their first year of marriage for a reality television series called "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica." The publicity stunt proved to be a romance killer and they divorced back in 2006 shortly after the show ended.
Vanessa Minnillo was a former Miss Teen USA who was also a music business insider. As a host on MTV, the pretty and smart brunette stood in sharp contrast to the ditzy blonde bombshell Jessica Simpson. She and Nick Lachey dated as a live-in celebrity couple for years, and the former boy band star from 98 Degrees seems to be exceptionally happy with his new bride.
Was Jessica happy to hear Nick was marrying Vanessa Minnillo? Suffice it to say she countered with an engagement announcement of her own that came out shortly after Nick made his announcement.
Nick and Vanessa Wedding
To keep their wedding private, they had to go to extremes. There was Hollywood fanfare of the modest type as the two got married on a private island owned by billionaire Richard Branson with TLC cameras rolling for the exclusive. At the time, only 35 guests were present. Their wedding planner also handled the exclusive wedding of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez as well as A-List reality TV star Khloe Kardashian (who wed NBA player Lamar Odom).
Wedding Fireworks
Since the FAA will not allow planes to fly in airspace dedicated to fireworks, the celebrity couple pulled a permit. While there were fireworks between Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo as they danced the night away barefoot on the Bahamian beach the night of their wedding, the evening ended with fireworks in the sky that kept the paparazzi cameras from capturing a glimpse of the festivities that day.
ABC News reports, "Helicopters and paparazzi around the island ... for us that's nightmare scenario," Lachey said. "We really don't want that to happen."
To prevent their wedding photos from showing up on celebrity sighting websites and magazine covers worldwide, they did something pro-active.
"We pull fireworks permits -- the FAA will not allow any type of aircraft over the area if there's a permit," Sacks said. What an unfortunate surprise that must have been to Paparazzi who found out the location of the secret wedding and were hoping to get photographs!
Celebrity Weddings
All celebrity wedding planners should remember this trick. Why? Because even though fans want to see the paparazzi photos, as human beings people also understand some moments in life really should be left private -- even if you are rich and famous Hollywood celebs loved by gossip columnists.
Cheers to Nick and Vanessa -- the hot new Hollywood power couple -- for deciding to be more low-key than he was with Jessica. They were officially married July 15, 2011.

Mohammad Rafi

Mohammad Rafi
The badshah of Bollywood playback singing, Mohammed Rafi, who gave Indian cinema 40 golden years of haunting melodies, was one of the few survivors in the industry who lived through its hard glitter with his soul in place, says his son and biographer Shahid Rafi.

Shahid, who is penning a book about his father with writer Sujata Dev, says he wants to explore the human side of his father.

"The book goes much beyond a conventional biography. It explores Mohammed Rafi the persona behind the musician, besides his musical legacy," Shahid Rafi told IANS.

"My father was a family man who did not socialise. He spent time with his family after work. He was very soft-spoken, down-to-earth, kind and charitable. He was a great father," he said.

The book, which is a tribute to Rafi on his 31st death anniversary, will be published by Om Books International in December.

"My father gave everything to the industry because as a human being, he was very different. He had a compassionate soul. It was difficult to be in the industry. As an impartial observer of the movie music, I think there cannot be another Rafi in the world. We are going to talk about my father as a human being and as a man in the book," he added.

Rafi Jr. was in the capital with co-author Sujata Dev to promote the book and rally support for a music institution in memory of his father, the Mohammed Rafi Academy.

Shahid set up the academy last year to teach Indian classical and contemporary music to youngsters and groom talent, mostly from the economically marginalised groups, who wanted to make music their livelihood, he said.

Shahid, who is hunting for talent to groom in his music academy, said he was looking for young musicians of promise from poor families who could not afford professional training.

"They don't have to pay. I will teach them everything - from music to how to handle a microphone and body language on stage," Shahid said.

Co-author of the biography Sujata Dev, who is also supporting Shahid in his mission to promote budding talent, said "the biography would be interview-based".

"We have avoided the internet completely. There are several biographies about Rafi's music. We met several people associated with the musician, like Shammi Kapoor, Usha Khanna, composer Pyarelal, Rishi Kapoor and even his instrumentalists to recreate Rafi's persona. It will be a little more than a biography spanning his whole life between 1930 to 1980," Dev said.

"He began his career as a playback at a time when Bollywood was in transition from the silent era to the talkies," Dev told IANS.

Recalling an anecdote, Dev said in course of her interviews she chanced upon the wife of one of the musician's old associates, who "emptied her jewellery box to Rafi and told him to build a music academy".

"Rafi returned the jewels to her with a token gift of Rs.1. His percussionist remembers him as a 'farishta' (angel), not a musician," Dev said.

Born on Dec 24, 1924, in Punjab, Mohammed Rafi began singing by chanting the notes that a "fakir" (Muslim saint) sung in his village. The family later moved to Lahore.

Rafi trained under Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pundit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami. He sang with K.L. Saigal at a concert for the first time at the age of 13. It opened the stage for Rafi.

The musician was awarded the Padma Shri in 1967. He died of a heart attack in Mumbai July 31, 1981, at the age of 56.

Jeffrey Dahmer

A man who narrowly escaped Jeffrey Dahmer and helped end the serial killer's murder and sexual assault spree two decades ago faced a possible homicide charge of his own on Thursday in Wisconsin.
Tracy Edwards, 52 and homeless, was arrested on Tuesday after a fight that led to a man falling into the Milwaukee River and dying. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's office said it was reviewing the evidence with a view to a possible homicide charge.
According to Milwaukee police, Edwards and two other homeless men were involved in an argument when one of the men fell into the Milwaukee River from a bridge. The other homeless man leaped off the bridge to save him, police said.
A police spokesperson declined to share more information, but said the case had been referred to the district attorney's office. An official with the district attorney's homicide unit said a review of this case may take several days to complete.
Twenty years ago this month, Milwaukee police found Edwards, half naked and partially handcuffed, in the street near Dahmer's apartment. Edwards told police he had just escaped Dahmer's apartment and led them back there.
Police arrested Dahmer that evening after finding body parts in his refrigerator and human remains throughout his apartment.
Dahmer, who is believed to have raped, killed and dismembered as many as 17 boys and men, often having sex with their remains before eating them, was later convicted of 15 murders.
He died in prison after a fellow inmate beat him with a broomstick in 1994.
Edwards, according to court records, has had several run-ins with the law involving drugs over the years.

Olivia Wilde

Who's the hottest "It" Girl for Geeks: Emma Stone or Olivia Wilde? That depends whether you're making your decision purely on the basis of their roles in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' or 'Tron: Legacy' or whether you're assessing them on sheer physical appeal.

Emma Stone is definitely more of the girl next door type, despite playing a girl with a very bad reputation in 'Easy A,' while Olivia Wilde is super-model gorgeous. Actually, with her impossible cheekbones and cat-like eyes, Wilde seems as alien as anything in 'Cowboys & Aliens.' It's hard to believe she's not a special effect, which seems to limit her roles to exotic, mysterious babes.

I like Stone, but with her freckled baby face, I can't ever see her playing a sexpot. She's definitely going to bring a different vibe to Gwen Stacy than Kirsten Dunst brought to playing Mary Jane Parker. I can't imagine we'll see Stone in a soaking wet makeout scene, a la Dunst's famous upside-down kiss with Tobey Maguire in 'Spider-Man.
Who's hotter?
No arguing with Maxim's ranking Olivia #1 and Emma a mere #66. As I said before, Olivia's got that kind of otherworldly hotness that makes you suspect Photoshopping, while Emma's got a far more "girl you bring home to mother" appeal. (Maybe why People put Emma, not Olivia on their "Most Beautiful List.")

"AKA"
It's kind of funny that in the roles that made us sit up and notice them for the first time, both actresses played characters without "real" names. Emma was the wisecracking, gun-toting teen zombie hunter Wichita in 'Zombieland,' so named for her hometown, while Olivia was known only as 'Thirteen' for much of her time on 'House.' Of course, their stage names aren't their given names either: Olivia Cockburn chose the last name "Wilde" in honor of the legendary Irish writer Oscar Wilde and Emma used to be known as "Emily."

Who's funnier?
I tend to think of Emma as having more comedy chops: She was great in 'Easy A' and 'Superbad' and continues to rack up comedy credits with 'Crazy Stupid Love.' I'm going to have to take Olivia's comedic flair on faith. (Have you seen her in the indie 'Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas?' Neither have I.) A colleague tells me she has some great scenes with Ryan Reynolds (who's really Justin Bateman) in 'The Change-Up,' so maybe there will be more comedy in Olivia's future, even if she's always playing a hot babe in a funny film.

Who kicks more ass?
I have to hand it to Olivia for her roles in 'Cowboys & Aliens' and 'Tron Legacy,' despite Emma's awesome zombie-wrangling and ability to outwit her fellow humans in 'Zombieland.' Olivia just looks like more of a badass.

Who's bigger at the box office?
Olivia wins for biggest-grossing film ('Tron Legacy' $172 million) but Emma's racked up a bigger box-office total in a shorter time, $429 million versus Olivia's $244 million. (That's not including 'Cowboys & Aliens,' which opens Friday.) Emma's biggest film, by the way, also her first: 'Superbad,' $121.5 million. Then again, Emma is landing leading roles, while Olivia still seems stuck playing "The Girl" in so many films.

Blondes get less respect
The first time I noticed Olivia was in her role as Mischa-Barton-lovin' bartender Alex on 'The O.C.,' where she was blonde, so when she popped up with nearly black hair on 'The Black Donnellys,' she was nearly unrecognizable. Her darker hair definitely suits her, though, and it makes those feline eyes and cheekbones pop. Emma as a blonde just looks odd, since we're all so used to her as a redhead in 'Easy A' and 'Zombieland." Maybe it's just the lighting in the first 'Amazing Spider-Man' trailer, but she looks washed out with lighter hair. And do natural blondes really have freckles? Let's just agree that Emma's a real redhead and make sure she never goes blonde again.

The big role that got away:
I can't quite picture Emma as mutant cheerleader Claire Bennet on 'Heroes,' or dating Milo Ventimiglia and making Lifetime movies her career. And although Olivia is wicked hot, she can't hold a candle to Eva Green, who landed the role of Bond Girl Vesper in 'Casino Royale.' And Olivia still got to work with Daniel Craig, so it's all good.

Iconic music role:
Who knew that Olivia once played Madonna in a faux 'Weird Al Yankovic' biopic? Yep, the short stars 'Breaking Bad''s Aaron Paul as the wacky musician, who romances the 'Like a Virgin' era Madonna. And it's probably a good thing that Emma (billed as "Emily Stone") never got a chance to play Laurie Partridge after landing the role in acompetitive reality show designed to cast a new series. She hasn't really advertised since that she can sing and with so many singer-actresses out there, I'm fine with that.

Who's more like to get an Oscar invite?
Emma's not likely to rate an Oscar nomination for her role as a plucky novelist in the upcoming prestige pic 'The Help,' but the inspirational message, historic setting and impressive supporting cast are more Oscar-friendly than Olivia's upcoming slate of films.

Who's taken it all off for their art?
Olivia went topless in 'Alpha Dog' and gets nearly naked for her roles in 'The Change-Up' and 'Cowboys & Aliens.' Despite Emma's bad girl reputation in 'Easy A,' she kept her clothes on for the role. So many starlets feel the need to strip at some point to prove their cred as an actress but I really hope Emma won't be among them.

Who's got the best social network?
As fans pointed out at Comic-Con, Emma has co-starred with both 'Social Network' stars Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. She said she'd totally friend those guys, but she insisted she doesn't have a Facebook page. Her (possibly real) Twitter account shows her in a Chaplin getup, but has tweeted, literally, twice. Olivia actually tweets on a regular basis -- everything from Jimmy Kimmel to Haiti -- and I think this is her real Facebook page.

A reception will be held at the royal palace Holyroodhouse, a short distance from the church. BBC News reports that the couple will travel between the sites in cars, not carriages.

It's rumored that the bride will wear a gown by Stewart Parvin, one of the queen's favorite designers. There's no word on who will be in her bridal party.

Edinburgh is readying for the royal wedding ceremony, which is set to begin at 3 p.m. According to the Daily Mail, the church, which is under heavy police guard, has been decked out with more than 400 white roses and hundreds of beech tree branches. Florists have also brought dozens of white carnations and white stargazer lilies into the chapel, along with small box trees and ivy.

On Friday night, guests will gather at a pre-wedding celebration. People magazine reports that younger guests are expected to party on the Windsor's retired vessel, the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is now moored in Leith docks.

The magazine also reports that the couple will forgo a honeymoon. Phillips has commitments in her career as a show-jumper, while Tindall has to report back to the England rugby training camp on Monday.

Sanjay Dutt
Sanjay Dutt's party-hearty streak continues, notwithstanding the recent brouhaha over his recent bashes.

Last night, Dutt hosted a party to usher in his birthday (which is today) for at least 100 guests at a Pattaya nightspot.

The actor, accompanied by his wife Maanayata and tots Shahraan and Iqra, is in Thailand for the shoot of his production, Rascals. Says a source, "Sanjay had booked the club. He had planned everything along with wife Maanayata, close friend Bunty Walia and manager Dharam Oberoi, besides Rascals' co-producers Sanjay Ahluwalia and Vinay Choksey.

A huge cake had been ordered, and local Thai food and spirits flowed.

Also invited to the bash were the entire Rascals cast and crew apart from the Afra Tafri team, who were also shooting in the vicinity.

Some of Dutt's close friends had specially flown in from Mumbai for his big day.

His guest list included Rascals director David Dhawan and co-star Ajay Devgn apart from the Afra Tafri stars Suniel Shetty, Govinda, Mugdha Godse among others.

The celebrations, we hear, had begun as early as Tuesday night when the Dutts took off from Mumbai.

The business class on board the flight was turned into a party zone to bring in Dharam Oberoi's birthday, which was on Wednesday. The star's close friends accompanied him on the flight.

Dutt wanted to make these parties an event to remember but for different reasons this time!

C String

The controversial drama queen Rakhi Sawant, who is back on small-screen with the new chat show ‘Gazab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyan', has shown a penchant to wear C-string lingerie on the show.
In the reality show, the actress, who will be seen interacting with the participants, giving them a shoulder to cry on and listening to their problems and advising them, has apparently insisted that the producers of the show should get her C-string lingerie.
The show, which will go on air from July 29, is apparently the second season of Rakhi’s earlier show 'Rakhi Ka Insaaf'.
Rakhi insists the producers to get her a C-string
It’s learnt that the producers were in a shock when the actress asked for the new modified version of the C-string panty and didn’t know how to react.
Speaking about Rakhi’s new fascination for a C-string, a source said, “Rakhi, who’s hosting the show, put forth her demands in terms of clothes and accessories. The cost of her wardrobe is around Rs70 lakh, way beyond what we had expected it to be… We are still negotiating.
“As if all this wasn’t enough, Rakhi recently read a lot about C-string and wants them to be included in her clothes. While her clothes aren’t a problem, getting a C-string is difficult. It’s not available in the Indian markets yet, but she has issued us an ultimatum and will refuse to shoot unless she gets them.”
It was comfortable to wear, says Rakhi
Rakhi, who takes every effort to look different on-screen, made sure that her demand for the strapless panty was met by the producers of the show as soon as she demanded for it.
Confirming about wearing a C-string panty, Rakhi stated, “I have always been a step ahead when it comes to style. It's true that I demanded the show producers to get me a C-string because it's important that panty lines don't show in short dresses.
“My dresses look more beautiful when I wear a C-string. I'm the first Indian celebrity to wear it on television."
When asked if C-string was comfortable, Sawant said, "It's comfortable though I used to fear that it might fall off!"

Rakhi Sawant

Rakhi Sawant was at her motormouth best in Delhi. And some brave guy apparently stole her sari!
Rakhi Sawant
Meri sari chori ho gayi. Aap hi batao main kya karti?" That's what Rakhi Sawant asked the press at the launch of her upcoming reality show, Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan".

The event was slated to start at 3pm on Tuesday in Delhi, but got delayed by two hours. Only when a few mediapersons walked out that the event started. "Main bahut maafi chahti hoon ki thoda late ho gayi," Rakhi said, to which the press retorted, "Do ghante ho gaye. Yeh kya thoda late hai?" After a brief pause, Rakhi tried to placate them as she said, "Aap jaan hi lelo meri. I don't want to cry here, but you won't believe that this press conference got delayed because my sari got stolen. Mere saath yeh tragedy ho gayi. You might think this is a publicity gimmick, but trust me, this is what has happened." On being asked why she couldn't wear something else, she replied, "Aise kaise kuch bhi pehen ke aa jati? Why didn't you send me your shirt?" came her rejoinder. "You won't believe it, I even asked the channel representatives to let me attend the press conference in my gown. I didn't want to keep my friends waiting." But the press was in no mood to forgive her and continued to ask her a string of weird questions such as "Do you think Abhishek Awasthi got this done?" "Will you be getting an FIR lodged?" to annoy her.

Rakhi also rebuked Delhi designers for charging her about `1.5 lakh for the sari she finally wore, which she said they would have offered to any Bollywood A-lister without charging a single penny. "Just because Rakhi Sawant wanted a sari, they had to charge over a lakh. Isn't this bizarre? I mean, Delhi designers have been blackmailing me. Had Kareena or Katrina been in a similar situation, they would not have had to pay anything," Rakhi retorted.

Rakhi, who had recently declared her desire to tie the knot with Rahul Gandhi, shocked everyone by shifting her allegiance to Baba Ramdev. "Mujhe nahin lagta Soniaji ke saath meri daal galegi. So I wouldn't mind marrying Swami Ramdev. He has loads of money and drives expensive cars. If this wedding happens, you all will get to see a glamorous sadhvi. Wouldn't that be interesting?" Rakhi refused to address the yoga guru as 'Baba', because "Baba toh aap logon ke liye hain. Mere liye toh woh Swami hi hain. I hope he doesn't call me 'behen'. If Imagine TV plans to do another "Swayamvar" for me, they'll have to get Swami Ramdev on the show. In fact, I'll try my best to get him on it."

When asked why Ramdev, Rakhi explained, "I find him hot. He is sexy. Haven't you ever seen his flat tummy? Bas ek baar shaadi ki mala unpe daal doon, unki aankh fadakna bhi band ho jayegi. And I can vouch for the fact that the yoga DVD which we will release will be far more sensuous and hot than Shilpa's. It will find several takers." Rakhi may be planning to meet Baba... err, Swami Ramdev, but she doesn't think she can do much to help him in the current situation he is in. "I'm just a bit scared of the cops, who might bash me up just as they bashed his followers. Lekin agar pyaar kiya toh danda kya?"
But how come she isn't considering anyone from Bollywood for the next season of "Swayamvar", if that ever happens? "I'm not interested in Bollywood." Not even in Salman Khan?? "Unka toh bina shaadi kiye hi sab chal raha hai. He has several girlfriends. Mere liye Baba hi hain."

With such whacky replies, Rakhi ensured that her "media friends" were entertained and didn't harbour any hard feelings for her by the end. Rakhi ka jaadu chal gaya!
